Why are some people afraid of Gays openly serving in the military?

I am wondering why some people are opposed to gays serving in the armed forces? I was Marine for 4 years & I have known I was gay since I was 8 years old. I had to hide my sexuality for the time I was in but(!) I considered that to be part of the sacrafice. I was just happy to have the chance to go to combat & serve my country; What I want to know is what are people afraid of happening if someone like me didn`t have to hide their sexuality? Would I have done a worse job during my 4 years in the corps? Like I said I am proud to have served my country & will never forget good times I had in Golf 2/1 & all the good men I met, some of whom have also turned out to be gay. robot_hooker5: Most Marines are Christian, does that mean we shouldn`t allow muslims to openly practice Islam since it might mess up unit cohesion?

FLbeachGirl: I don`t agree with heavy drinking or swearing, yet I was forced to be quartered with people who did alot of both; Is that ok with you? I was accepting of their lifestyles. jager00x: `prissy`? No man, I was an 0311 in the marines & I wasn`t flamboyant. Everyone I served with was shocked to find out I was gay after we all got out (facebook). So ya, I just think it`s unfair I couldn`t have a relationship while I was active duty because I was afraid that my command would find out & discharge me. I never said I had to flirt at work or go around prancing;

Other soldiers do not want & should not have to shower with you or be forced into living quarters with a lifestyle they do not agree with

Ignorance; As long as gays don`t force their beliefs on people I don`t see what the big deal is. Besides, it`s not so much actual servicemen who are opposed to it as ignorant homophobes sitting on their lazy asses at home just looking for something to bitch about

im just going to go off by the title & not the long description; ok so most of the country is unanimous. there are a few people who choose to deviate from norm; us as human beings procreate & raise children. we have to keep this foolishness out of our kids heads cuz at their early stage they don`t know anybetter. we cannot just choose to destroy gays completly but(!) It`s more fair to simply let them live there life in a little bit of secrecy. It`s better to lie to kids than having them suck their friends cocks at playground; society is kinda just like that

It`s great for anyone of any orientation to be able serve their country, that`s fact. However it`s really a no-win situation. In any case someone will feel uncomfortable, for example: `A group of women showering together with a few straight men will make women feel uncomfortable` is in essence same scenario as a `group of men showering together with a few gay men, will make the straight men feel uncomfortable`; Let`s say you put gay men who are not attracted to women, in the woman`s showers. women will probably still feel uncomfortable. Even worse, putting lesbians in the male showers. What are you to do? Give them their own changing area, showering area, barracks? It`s not a wise idea, in my opinion to share orientation. It will just cause problems like the ones listed above

It has nothing to do with fear & everything to do with unit cohesion; As Marine, you should know that

to me It`s a professional job your sexual orientation shouldnt be brought to the workplace. it could cause conflict for either party so It`s best if left unknown if you ask me

While I am not in the military (yet) I can speak for my heterosexuality & opinion of my relatives currently serving. If homo-sexuals are to be openly gay, enlisting/recruitment numbers for hetero-sexual males are going to drop drastically. You as a homosexual would know that there are plenty if not a majority of heterosexuals biased against you, & of those people many wouldn`t serve simply because homosexuality is open; Because we are fighting war in two countries, we can`t afford to lose recruits; It`s fact if you don`t believe It you`re crazy/willfully blind. Also plenty marines & special ops guys currently serving (famous for being masculine & tough) would not take kindly to gays flooding in. I guarantee many would leave the military, while some would start violence. We don`t need another war. As R. Lee Ermy (a marine) put it, ` what the hell is wrong with way it`s been? When I went in, nobody asked me if I was gay; Nobody asks this people, nobody drills them. `
