Do you think gay pride parades actually do more damage to the gay rights movement?

I dunno; I`ve just been thinking about it lately

we have made so much progress so far, so right now main point that we should be trying to convey is that we are really no different than straight people; Don`t you think gay pride parades just kind of serve as a glaringly, painfully obvious demonstration that we are different.

I just feel that in terms of breaking stereotypes, gay pride parades actually hinder process rather than help it.

What are your opinions? (having said that I did go to mardi gras this year & I had a really good time lol)

gaymentop 		Yes, yes I do & always have.

I think instead of having a parade with huge dild0s & d1cks hanging out we need to have a `respect-a-gay` day at work or a come out day where we give support to people who want to come out;

To people that say `I`m just celebrating who I am`, well I say you`re more than your genitals. Why does 90% of the parade revolve around sex Because people use it as an excuse to be promiscuous; & that is most certainly what my homosexuality is NOT about.

Edit: I would like to see 90% of parade as: same sex families, gays that are in different social niches (i; e. lawforce, education, law, doctors etc), straight supporters of same sex relations, & even transvestites, with 10% being t*ts, azz & c0ck

serenity 		it helps in that it desensitizes people from exposure to homosexuality, but(!) I agree the promotion of stereotypes isn`t that helpful

serenity 		What gays are fighting for & pareds are so different. Gay pride never shows anything about gay family values or any of issues effecting gay people. Do they hurt no but(!) they don`t help. Black history month shows everything it took for blacks get this far. What would you think if all the floats had rappers & chicks shaking their ass?

jimmygay 		I think it does hinder it; I don`t try to be stereotypical lez or anything except for what I am, which is a mother of two beautiful children with a full time job, & a wife to a spouse, who just happens to be the same sex that I am; Why try to make tiny differences into major ones?

charliegay 		Most people assume I am straight but(!) I see no reason why gays who are more flamboyant should have to censor their public appearance & behavior to fit in with hetero-sexual norms to be judged worthy of equality

charliegay 		I`m not a big fan of them; It`s not an accurate representation of the gay population at all, and. Really, I just think it gives form to all of the stereotypes surrounding homosexuals; Everybody always says, `The church/government is so dumb; I mean, gay people are just like everyone else!`

Well, yeah; We are. but(!) when the only mainstream exposure we get is a parade where men are clad in banana hammocks, & girls look like a member of the Hell`s Angels. Well, you kind of see where the stereotypes come from.

Fundamentally, I am in complete agreement though; Those parades are asking for equality, so why not present ourselves as equals, rather than as glittery, winged people that can`t really assimilate to suit & tie society?

gaymentop 		I do think gay pride parades are great to celebrate the gay pride but(!) yes I do agree it can do some damage to gay rights movement.

Example:

Their was gay pride parade in San Diego, I don`t know what year, but(!) when they were having the floats pass through the parade; 1 float was San Diego Fire Department & they were all straight, they came to support to gay pride event. but(!) some of San Diego fireman felt offended when some of the guys on street were shouting sexual terms & doing obscene gestures to them. So they SDFD sued city & won & 1 of sponsors or hosts of the parade apologized to them

gaykerk 		What gay pride does is it forces not just straight people but(!) also bisexuals & homo-sexuals to have look at life`s realities. You would be surprised at how many of our own need a kick up the bum just as much as the straights do.

Until the day when there is no longer silly practices, as an example, when It`s no longer seen as strange for gay parent to wish his child would grow up to be gay like him or gay uncle say his nephew is gay so they will spend time together as uncle can be his roll model, & people see that as wise, only then can we relax just a little.

We are no where near correcting homophobic behaviour; If we stopped now, In just a few years we will be back in the dark days again.

As for gay Pride, may be It`s time for Mr & Miss Quite Homosexual, the ones who no 1 expected is gay, may be It`s time for them to stand up & be proud & let people know you don`t need to be a Screaming Queen or Butch Dyke to be gay. Most gays are never noticed
