Gay rights in 1910s?

In the movie Chéri, there`s a scene where courtesans are with a person, which I reckon is a man, though it might be very manly woman. If it`s man, it`s obviously a gay man, because when the woman says that all men are strange, that. creature agrees.

Was it comon in 1910s for women to befriend gay men? Where they seen as fashionable like they are today?
