Why was gay judge allowed to ask a gay marriage question to Miss California during the Miss USA pageant?

They only asked her that because she is from California & was expected to say `YES, i totally support gay marriage`
Why would they allow a gay judge to ask that question? Of course he is going to score her a zero if she doesn`t have same opinion on gay marriage as he does.
She should have won because she`s beautiful & stuck to her beliefs & gave an honest answer instead of telling that judgmental queen perez hilton what he wanted to hear.

i kind of agree with you; to some point; i don`t like him either lol; he is annoying

but It`s fact judges didnt like her opioion. mrs. america has to be well rounded. she is going to be put in million situcations. and may be the judges thought she couldnt handle them in a proper way;

i think they should have asked the other girl the same question. just to see what she would say

Well in the part of the country I`m from, the controversy is more over fact that a man called a women (who was simply using, every Americans right to freedom of speech) a dumb-b*tch, just because she does not have the same views as him!

Well now that America`s manners have gone, I guess our morals shouldn`t be far behind?

I applaud her for standing up for what she believes & not just giving him answer he wanted to hear. She did not say anything negative about homosexuals, she just stated her opinion that marriage should be between a man & a woman; I don`t know why he was picked to be a judge anyway. In video on his website, he called her a stupid b*tch & said that if she would have won, he would have snatched that crown off her head & ran out door. She carried her self with grace & dignity & he is just being childish & showing that he has no class whatsoever. It is sad that in our society, people who have morals & stand up for what is right get slammed like that. She may not have won but(!) she should be proud of herself

Because it`s a topic of social & legal interest.
Fortunately, it revealed that she is a mindless bigot & in no way deserves to represent the U. S; (much less California) on the national stage

I`m so glad you asked this question.

I don`t watch the pageants because they don`t interest me, but(!) the furor over this 1 caught my attention. I read a news article & then did just a small bit of research because the nature of question really has me puzzled. it has NOTHING to do with being Miss USA.

The Miss USA competition began as swimsuit contest sponsored by Catalina Swimwear; Fair enough. It was publicity stunt to sell bathing suits, & it grew into something else; So then I was curious about how the contestants are judged ; what`s the purpose of line of questioning?

If you go to the Miss USA website & look at FAQs, you`ll see the following:

HOW ARE the SEMI-FINALISTS CHOSEN?
In 1997, a dual-paneled judging system was introduced; 1 panel judges the preliminary rounds; the other panel judges the live telecast; All contestants are judged in 3 areas of preliminary competition which are not always televised due to time constraints:
1. Interviews - Judges spend time with each delegate to learn about her successes, goals & ambitions.
2. Swimsuit Competition - Each delegate wears 1 of a variety of swimsuit styles provided by a sponsor.
3. Evening Gown Competition - Each delegate wears a gown she has chosen for herself.
All scores are tallied in each of the 3 categories. contestants with highest aggregate scores are named the semi-finalists. the competition is narrowed twice more to produce the winner.

Nowhere in there does it say that she`s going to be judged on her opinions on questions of social conscience.

ITS AN OPINION! Nobody has right to tell you what your opinion should be, & while I don`t have to agree with another person`s opinion, an opinion cannot be right or wrong.

So wacky Perez Hilton really should have been prohibited from asking question. What did it have to do with Ms; California`s goals, ambitions or successes? Nothing.

I happen to agree with Ms. California. & I can`t say that Ms. North Carolina did not deserve to win because again, I didn`t watch the pageant. but(!) I think that Ms; California is to be highly commended for having a backbone, for standing up for her beliefs & not backing down from them.

Good on ya, Carrie Prejean!

This should alarm the Americans the beginning of the end of `freedom of speech`. Too sad.

When will the employers start to ask such question to their employees & fire the 1 who answer like Miss CA did. What is it if it`s not a `DISCRIMINATION`?

Now the whole nation can `SEE` the persecution from GLBT group. Shame on them.

And Perez Hilton has screwed his life enough now he wants to screw other people`s life

Your right Perez Hilton is supposed to be bias. the pageant is not a political forum to debate your views; In the aftermath, I think we can all agree that Hilton asked that question for a reason & wanted a very specific answer. Questions at pageant should not be formulated so that if they don`t tell you the answer you want to hear, you will score them less. Would you be upset if a right-wing abortion protester was judge & asked her views on abortion? Would you still be agreeing with question? Would you be upset if she was docked points for supporting abortion? Or, would that be okay because you agreed with her answer. What we seem to look for in a representative of any organization is a core belief, fight for that belief, & true genuineness in a person. I think you find that in Miss California. You just don`t agree with her views

I am completely for same sex marriage; When asked a question in 1 of those pageants the answer is usually the dumb `I wish for world peace` answer. This question was controversial & I think suiting for the pageant. It`s a topic that is `right now` & had place in the pageant to be answered. Now, fact that may be it was reserved for Miss CA simply b/c CA is the `gay` state. well actually that does make sense. It had something to do with where she lives, so it was suiting now that I think about it. I absolutely don`t want the person who is Miss America & travels the world `representing` us to be against equality; I do not commend her for `sticking to her beliefs`; it`s a stupid belief. I don`t agree with it. lot of people in this country don`t agree with it. Just because he was gay judge doesn`t mean he shouldn`t ask question; It actually means he should have asked it. Now just because he didn`t agree with it doesn`t mean he should have given her a low score; He was supposed to be bias. but(!) her answer was not worded in most educated manner; Did you ever think may be that`s the reason she was judged low on that question? I`m glad she didn`t win; I`m glad the question was asked; I`m embarrassed that people in this country stick by such a primitive reasoning for not allowing equality amongst It`s citizens; Makes me sick

It doesn`t matter is the judge is gay or not, the thing that matter is that if he can separate his personal opinion from being a judge. If a contestant gave good answer then you should give her a high score; the judge`s personal opinion should not affect his professionalism

Gay marriage is controversial topic; It wasn`t right nor wrong for her to answer the way she did; yet-- she knew how her answer would be interpreted. She`s supposed to be `Miss California`; if you know what I mean;

It really tarnishes `I believe in `land of the free` thing; but(!) when it comes to gays; `

PR suicide in my opinion.

It shows you how strong moral belief can be; she couldn`t lie, & now look where she is. That killed her passion because she would`ve had to take a moral decision that she would have not been clear with; I think her implications of doing so were there right as she said it. Such an outspoken women as Miss America? I think not xD

You`re right, it`s a valid question being that she is representing the state of California. Some people applauded her, some people booed her. the fact that she answered it so undiplomatically shows she`s not the best choice for Miss USA. Winning that title doesn`t mean you blurt out your opinion - you need to take moment to formulate coherent & inclusive answer; After all, you will be representing the entire country; He wasn`t only 1 who gave her a low rating, sweetie.

I agree she`s pretty, but(!) after hearing her interviewed on Today Show this morning, it`s obvious she`s not quite as bright as Miss North Carolina, who clearly deserves the crown for her intelligent & diplomatic answer to her equally divisive question

I agree, she should have won. I admire her for sticking to her beliefs, & giving an honest answer. That question asked her opinion, & it`s not right that when she gave her opinion, Perez got mad at her.
I personally am against gay marriage for religious reasons, but(!) even if I was for it, I would not be answering this any differently She is entitled to her opinion, & who does Perez think he is to punish her for giving it?

i thought that was very suspicious too. I saw her interviewed on today show & she said she wouldnt change her answer 1 bit even knowing it cost her the crown; I`m okay with gay marriage but(!) I`m not okay with how this worked out; first why is a gay guy judging beauty contest? 2, how does he get to ask her contestant from california this question ? third, when did it become okay to persecute people because of their beliefs. ? I think the interviews of perez afterward demonstrate that he shouldnt be judge; he called her stupid & a few other names ; this tells me he is judging on politics solely; the ultimate blame goes to trump for creating this crap in the firsst place

Look I think she said her piece & good for her but(!) basically imagine this was 1940 & they asked about inter-racial marriage. the answers are PR & PR answers change with times;

While it was acceptable at 1 time to be against inter-racial marriage it is no longer acceptable.

We are at same point with homo-sexuals & gay marriage. You can be against it & good for you but(!) if you are you are publicly saying that you discriminate against gays; and even if false the image is set;

She was free to say her piece & explain how she feels & I respect that & hey no big to me;
However the pageant is equally as free to decide she does not represent their views & their values;

Being in the public eye means being aware that what you say is judged & anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot or did not come from this planet. just like how in US our current President did not wear a flag pin & everyone cried he hated America.

Elike> I see so like usual it is anti-gays can do & say whatever & everyone else has to like it but(!) when the other side speaks It`s mind it is `keeping you down` & being `unjust`. Yeah right. I see Ms. Cal was free to speak her mind but(!) evidently the private organization of the pageant doesn`t have the same right to decide. Yeah, you`re being real balanced & tolerant

It was proven on twitter by Billy Bush that Perez` score put
her down & stopped her from winning. What a self centred asshole he is. He asked a ridiculous question & got an answer right back between his butt cheeks & then couldn`t handle it. He then goes & lambasts her continuously on his website just coz her views differed to his; I think gay people need to get down off their high horses & just accept that it was HER opinion; She was robbed of the title and is real Miss USA

I recall that Barack Obama was asked the same question & gave essentially the same answer that Miss California gave; He still has his crown & nobody has called him B word or accused him of having half a brain.

I applaud Miss California for giving an honest answer instead of the politically correct answer. She definitely got a raw deal;

It is totally illogical for a homosexual to be selected as a judge for a beauty pageant; Perhaps he is envious of her good looks

it wasn`t right or wrong for her to say that. they asked her her opinion. she gave her opinion. unfortunately judge decided that he didn`t like it. my question is is what did he expect? she is representing a state that the majority of citizens already stated that they are not for gay marriage at this time? what did he think that the ballots were stuffed by fake people or the outcome rigged or something? californians have already said that they were against gay marriage. get over it perez!

I am straight but(!) not narrow. So, when it comes to gays, I could care less;

But, that question should never have been asked; It`s entirely too controvertial & has no place; Other examples would be.

`Are you for or against woman`s right to have an abortion?`

`Do you think that in our modern society the death penalty is fair?`

`Did USA do the right thing when we invaded Iraq, even though we now know there were no weapons of mass destruction?`

`Do you think it is fair the way that the Israeli governmet treats the Palestinian people?`

`Do you think that Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson are themselves a bit racist?`
