Why has there been a resurgence of bareback gay porn over the last several years?

Throughout late 80`s & through 90`s condoms were used in almost all gay adult films; Because of the HIV epidemic, bareback films were frowned upon; but(!) now into 2000`s, there has been a huge resurgence of bareback gay porn, DVD`s & websites;

Is it some kind of [gay] societal rebellion underway against safe sex?

Excellent question Jason. Interestingly enough, similar question was posted to me on my blog. While I cannot provide a simple answer as to WHY the resurgence of bareback porn, I can tell you that it remains a controversial topic within the gay men’s community; particularly the leather/kink community; & shed some light on the situation; While some in our community feel that bareback has no place in community events such as International Mr. Leather contest, Folsom Street Fair or gay Pride celebrations, others view barebacking as form of Risk Aware Consensual Kink (RACK). This topic continues to generate controversy whenever it is brought-up.

The leather/kink community was 1 of the first & hardest hit communities since the HIV/AIDS epidemic. As a result, we have lost a generation of men whose knowledge & wisdom are irreplaceable. Many traditions were simply lost & on top of this, the leather/kink community face discrimination even within the gay community based on our sexual proclivities.

It used to be that you cannot watch porn without seeing condoms as a way for porn producers to promote sexual health amongst gay men. the general consensus was “if porn stars did it, people would likely follow. ” It worked for while but(!) let’s face it. Is it hot to put on condom during sex? Are we thinking of safer sex while we are engaged in some activity that preoccupies most of our mind? I think not.

With the insurgence of stronger medication & combination therapy, the once feared disease that carried an immediate sentence is now somewhat manageable. Those that survived are now living longer & healthier than the dark days. Many of these survivors carry with them a strong sense of trust, honor & respect leatherman’s unwritten code of honor. This left many who are interested in fitting into this lifestyle felt isolated & left out as they seek a sense of direction. Combined with poor self image & esteem, they gradually become gift seekers or those that want to be infected;

Is it hot to use a condom during sex? It can be when it is done right; Is it hot not to use a condom during sex? It can be. It’s all in perspective. While everyone will agree that no sex is ever worth dying for but(!) other than gift seekers/givers, who are we to judge others who practice safe/unsafe sex? It’s all about our own choice.

There is no right or wrong answer to this controversial question. Only personal experiences, choices & statistics which really doesn’t offer much insight. larger problem we have in hand is our own self-image; Who are we? Why are we the way we are today? Why do we continue to do bad things to ourselves, & to the community?

Do I have the answer to all these questions? No; Do we have answers to these questions as a collective? Yes!

I don`t think it`s `backlash` against safe sex, as much as it is ignorance. People in their twenties & early thirties were just barely growing up in those times (early HIV epidemic), & may be they think HIV isn`t as much of a threat as it once was; At least that`s what I hope it is.

Straights are greatest group at risk for AIDS lately, so may be the gay porno makers are saying it`s okay to have unprotected sex if you`re gay

I think there are several issues - there is a strong self-destructive element in many gay people. If you are constantly being told you are worthless you start to believe it;
Also with treatments for HIV becoming more effective the heat has gone off a little;
Plus we`ve always been subversive - this time undermining ourselves
