Why is there such homophobia in football?

I decided to write a paper on discrimination in European football, & came across lot of sites that claimed that there is much discrimination in sport.

I red that a former player came out of closet after retiring & he then committed suicide. It is a shame & I am disgusted that top players refused to take part in an anti-gay campaign because they were worried about the backlash.

Are europeans as homophobic, or is it just fans of the sport;

Football is fine as if you meant soccer (US name for the sport), anything outside of US is called football for soccer.

`I am disgusted that top players refused to take part in an anti-gay campaign` are you for or against homophobia? Sounds like you are for homophobia.

There`s discrimination everywhere, I don`t see why sports would be an exception

It would have been funny if you were talking about American Football considering that it features a herd of males prancing around in tights all day chasing after a pig-skinned, narrow shaped ball

Titans of the sports world are supposed to be paragons of masculinity & models of testosteroned maleness; I think they perhaps take umbrage with their gay teammates because they are `less than real men. ` I think they also find it a bit emasculating that a gay guy could be as good (or, Heaven forbid, BETTER than) than his str8 teammates; There is ALSO perhaps some nervousness concerning `is he checking me out?` paranoia. Why str8 men get so uptight about another man finding them attractive of desirable I`ll never figure out. Why can`t that be considered a compliment rather than an insult?

The fans, too, are part of the problem; God forbid that a really talented, in-your-face, scrummer on the gridiron could actually be GAY! Say it isn`t so! I can`t like & cheer for someone who is. well, who is; 1 of THOSE! Why not? Good question; What is it about successful, athletic & VERY MASCULINE gay men that the public doesn`t get? It probably has something to do with learned gender roles.

Have you heard of Eric Roberts, Australian footballer-turned-actor? Same with Gareth Thomas.

In AMERICAN football you might research David Kopay & Esera Tuaolo

Its because sports are supposed to be a MAN`S thing, full of masculinity; leaving no room for anyone who might be considered NOT MANLY
