Australians are very laid back; & the average Aussie will not have problem with homosexuals. Australia has a very modern & accepting culture so don`t bee too worried.

Sydney has massive gay-pride parade each year & we love it! Also, every city has a gay culture hot-spot where you can meet other people!

I mean, like in any country, just act appropriately with displays of public affection (this applies to both straight & gay), & you won`t have a problem

http://www; mardigras; org. au/ All though I`m not 1 I see them often around Queensland & that`s only ones that are obvious so I guess there are thousands & I love watching the mardi gras on Tv which is held this Saturday. Everyone looks like they are having tremendous fun. They have week of celebrations & a ball as well called the Sleaze ball. 1 of our well known Doctor & health official came out a few years ago & announced she is gay & she is a very well respected lady

Sydney or Melbourne are both great for the `gay life` but(!) stick more to the city because the further out you go, the more traditional & closed-minded people can be.
It is a free country & everyone should be allowed to be openly gay & show affection without being judged. but(!) easier it is for people to accept it, then the better life You will have

The age of consent for gay sex is the same as that for hetero-sexual sex - 16 in most States & territories but(!) I think it is 17 in Tasmania; Australia has an excellent gay sub-culture which is seen most in the big cities although there are plenty of gay people in the country.

Sydney & Melbourne have strong gay cultures with plenty of facilities for gay people. There are parts of each city where lots of gay people live. In Sydney it is the Surry Hills/Darlinghurst/Paddington area & Newtown/Erskineville/around Sydney University area. There are even gay resorts in holiday spots like Cairns.

Sydney has annual gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras festival in February which is month of film, theatre, dance, music & art with a gay theme. This culminates in annual parade & dance party which is on this Saturday, 1st March; This years parade is the 30th anniversary of the first in 1978 which started as peaceful parade & ended with Battle of Darlinghurst Road & 54 arrests. Six years later in 1984, homosexuality was decriminalised in NSW.

Australia took on the safe-sex message very early & promoted it well. HIV/AIDS was not as devastating here as it was in, say, the USA because governments had no problems with promoting safe sex for everyone despite complaints from the religious right; You will find free condoms at all sex-on-premises places & in most gay bars.

Enjoy yourself, there is no reason for any gay or lesbian not to have a ball in Australia
