American gay guy here, really want to visit Australia, what is it like?

Sorry I`m posting this in the gay section, but(!) I have few questions. I really want to visit Australia; What is it like compared to US? As a gay man who is relatively masculine, would I be okay going to straight bars there (I don`t tell every person I meet that I`m gay)?

I`ve done lot of research & it seems as though many things are better there in Australia; the weather (from where I live here in the US), the economy, & friendly people.

Oh, just FYI -- I would like to visit Brisbane since it`s warm all year.

P. S. I`ve also researched getting working VISA & I realize it`s not easy.

I live in Australia. I have been to Brisbane & you are right about the weather. Brisbane is in Queensland & there are other great places there; I actually live in Sydney; You should be okay going into straight bars but(!) Sydney has an area that is popular with gay men. the actual city is very relaxed with gay men & you can walk along the street holding hands & not get hassled; I worked for someone who was gay & he told me a bit about the gay world. I don`t know what you want to know exactly; weather is okay but(!) Queensland is 1 of warmest. Remember though that yes it is warmer in winter but(!) it is hot in summer. Brisbane should be okay but(!) if you move up to top of Queensland then it is really, really hot & very humid. I have heard that economy is better. I always thought America was better but(!) I have recently found out a few things. Firstly over here you can visit a doctor for free; the doctors get paid from the government which is tax payers money. I guess that only applies if you live here. Also health insurance is pricey but(!) affordable; the gun laws are strict. There are more government assisted benefits, so if you are out of work for a while you can get help while looking for another job. I find that people are not so friendly in Sydney but(!) they are in Queensland.

Brisbane is warm all year round. but It`s also in tropics so it gets very stormy in summer but(!) It`s very nice in winter aswell; Sydney`s probably a better compromise; If you don`t mind bit of cold then Adelaide or Melbourne`s pretty good because they might be cold in winter but(!) they`re beautiful in summer. Adelaide has on average more hours of sunshine then anyother capital city in Australia & from about september It`s warm until April; February has lots of hot days (35-40 degrees celsius) but(!) the rest of the time 20-30 degrees in summer, spring, autumn; Depends what time of year your visiting, if you visiting in winter then Brisbane`s the go but(!) if your visiting in summer your better off with Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne or Perth

Australia`s pretty good `mate`. I would recommend going to Queensland or Sydney. Visit in American Winter because at the moment it is really cold compared to America where It`s warm & sunny.

Australia is nothing like Americans think it is. We do not have Kangaroos running around crazy in street or Outside `dunnys` (toilets). We do have roads, cars, buses, trains, bikes, buildings & anything else that would be American.

Oh, & about your `straight bar` question. If you are the kind of gay person with high voice who dresses `fashionably` & talks like girl, then you probably won`t fit in with the locals; Try to dim down High voice & you should be OK.

However if you want to see the stereotypical Australia, go somewhere like Alice Springs which is in the middle of Australia.

It all depends on what you want to know;
You wouls probably be fine in a `straight` bar, so long as you don`t advertise your sexuality; Sadly to say, there are many honophobics around.
I don`t know much about the US personally, so I can`t help you much there.

Hope I helped you out a bit!

so you like the aussie accent huh? (you said you did when you answered 1 of my questions)

I live in Melbourne & it is quite LGBT friendly (most of Australia is) although Brisbane there are a lot of arrogant guys there.
I guess you are alright to walk into a `straight` bar (not everyone there is straight) but(!) there will always be people who don`t want gay people there so don`t get too drunk & accidentally tell someone you shouldn`t
