Back Bay has a very large gay population, & is also home to a lot of great restaurants (I personally recommend Addis Red Sea once you get there. sweet little Ethopian place), a few gay clubs like Vapor, & neat little shops; It`s 1 of the more expensive areas but(!) it`s worth it. It`s on the Orange line & only a couple stops from Downtown Crossing so it`s a good location.

Allston & Brighton are hip, cool areas that attract loads of young professionals & students gay & straight. TONS of restaurants, great shopping, & right on the green line! Can`t beat it, & it`s generally less expensive than an area like Back Bay or Beacon Hill;

Across Charles River is Cambridge, & Cambridge is VERY gay friendly; I grew up there & in my neighborhood there were 2 gay male couples living on the block, & next block up was a gay female couple. 2 of kids I went to junior high with had lesbian moms & 1 had gay dads. When I got to high school, nearly everyone *wanted* to be gay or bisexual for at least few months. it`s about as gay friendly as it gets. It`s across river but(!) five minutes on the outbound red line & you`re in middle of downtown Boston.

Overall, though, you can pretty much live in any part of Boston except may be parts of Southie, East Boston, & Roxbury, which are lower-income, low-socioeconomic areas with higher crime. Anywhere in metro Boston you`ll be fine; even with the more conservative townie types, they mostly mind their own business; Keep in mind you`re living in a state where majority of people support your rights as a human being to live like everyone else!
